bit of a photospam post

July 11th, 2009 by Brittney

Since today is my official “rest and pack for the next week” day, I’m going to be a little light on words (who knows though, since I’m verbose on a quiet day) and heavy on imagery.

In Sisters, my friend Savannah and I went antiquing:

Also I got these cool red and white sunnies. Awesome, no? I love them!

We found many cool and also many terribly ugly things.

Cool:

Terribly ugly:

My sister and I share an extreme fondness for camels. It’s… it’s kind of a long story.

I’m still kind of disappointed this doesn’t match ANYTHING in my future apartment!

Also I wish I would have purchased this:

I guess this is proof that I’m apparently a hat person. Saturday Jane, I guess you’re right. But I never wear hats!

The next day we went to the Petersen Rock Garden and it was kind of amazingly gorgeous.

I love peacocks. I love the way they look and I also love harassing them. Yeah… I’m kind of a jerk.

It was a very neat place! This guy built all of these structures and little houses on his property from the 1930s through the 50s! It was pretty neat, and the waterlilies were amazing!

It was a most interesting and unusual place! What weird tourist attractions have you been to lately? Are there any that I should add to my list? (I LOVE TOURISTS! hahaahaa)

I only have photos from day 1 and 2 so far, so you’ll get to see more later!

vacationing

July 9th, 2009 by Brittney

Welp, I’m back! It looks like the internet didn’t explode and my vacation went totally well, which was awesome.

A better post will come tomorrow or the next day, with actual photos of my finds and adventures, but since I was in Central Oregon I must say that I’ve learned quite a bit about fashion. You might say I’ve learned everything I’ll ever need to know.

So, here are the top 5 things I didn’t know about fashion before I went to Central Oregon.

1. Turquoise matches everything.
2. Ten gallon hats are for wimps! Go’fer the 20 gallon.
3. Dreamcatchers are the new must-have for Summer AND Fall AND Winter 2009!
4. Myrtlewood earrings* will bring some “jazz” to any hum-drum outfit.
5. Nothing says, “I’m totally not a tourist!” like a hot-pink shirt with a glittery unicorn on it.

I’m still devastated the unicorn shirt didn’t come in my size.

*WHY is it always Myrtlewood? Does nobody love oak or pine jewelry?!

leavin’ on a jet plane~

July 3rd, 2009 by Brittney

Pssst. The giveaway is over there! It ends tomorrow, July 4th, at 9pm Pacific.

So… Next week I’m going on vacation! I don’t exactly have to catch a plane or a boat or a train, though I am going to brave the ever-terrifying bus ride back allll by myself and let me tell you, re-reading Winona’s experiences with that bus service did not help my terror at all.

But regardless!

This is a photo of me and Savvy, my friend who lives Far Away who I get to go visit. We’re going to enjoy many days in the sunshine, maybe spend some time on a boat, and most likely spend a good chunk of our time (and money) at flea markets and antique stores.

I’ve been meaning to purchase a really nice, expensive swimsuit online for this trip, but because of my work schedule and my easily-distracted personality, (Hey look! Shiny things!) I just recently came to terms that I waited too long to do so. I didn’t really have the time to go swimsuit shopping, so I contented myself with casually looking through the reject-bathing suits in the fitting room and wishing I could find the perfect one.

What were my requirements for said perfect bathing suit?

1. My size. (Sometimes hard to find, sadly.)
2. One piece. (Tankini?! HAHAHAHAAAAA, who are you kidding?)
3. Super flattering. (Can I get a “What, what” ladies?)
4. Red And White Polka-dotted.
5. (the one I could give or take) Style: Semi-vintagey.

I walked into the back warehouse room one night, looking for trashbags and saw it. Messily crumpled in a red-and-white-heap on a table amongst other swimsuits, my swimsuit called to me.

I’m not even going to lie and admit that I dropped the trashbag and ran across the warehouse to examine it. Red. White. Polka-dotted. Cute style, one piece… my size.

YES.

It was even a decent price, and my later trip to the fitting room (Not on work time, I swear!) revealed it to be the absolute perfection in bathingsuit cuts. Cute. Vintagey. Red-and-white-polka-dotty. Flattering. My size!

And now mine.

Not pictured: red lipstick wearing pin-up girl

(Did I mention that there was only one?! FATE.)
Obviously I wanted a red-and-white-polka-dotty swimsuit to match my AMAZING red ruffley umbrella, as well as my red-and-white-polka dotty $3 wedges. (all pictured) While I may never actually be a pin-up model, I content myself in knowing that I already own some of the gear needed.

Sadly, since I’m riding the bus home, the red-and-white umbrella will not actually be making an appearance, but that’s okay… my red wedges and my red lipstick will give me the strength to carry on!

I think this might evolve into another Shopping Advice Tip. ‘Go to the store, the perfect thing might be there, waiting for you, it just might be the wrong time of year, or not what you’re looking for Right At That Moment. Or it might be! Don’t worry about forcing the find.’

Orrrrr something.

giveawaygiveaway

July 1st, 2009 by Brittney

So… Um, how awesome would a free giveaway be?

Totally awesome?

or freakin’ AMAZINGLY AWESOME?

I’m thinking the 2nd one.

So, on that note, I’m proud to annoynce that I’m doing a free giveaway from the fabulous company We Love Colors!

We Love Colors is a company devoted to all things awesomely colored tights. They have over 51 different colors and are my go-to for hard-to-find styles.

I already own a few pairs of their tights, and will tell you right now that they’re awesome. Expect a full review soon, but I want to get this give-away going before I go on my epic summer vacation.

Here are the details. There are going to be two winners. (Double your chances! Better than the lottery!)

All you have to do is leave a comment with your name and email address, and tell me what kind/color of tights you would pick out, and what type of outfit you’d wear, as well.

(Like for me? I think my next purchase will be a pair of their teal tights to pair with my gray secretary skirt. How pretty would that be? Especially with a pair of charcoal gray pumps!)

Keep in mind, Ladies and Gents, that this contest is open for both Ladies and Gents. We Love Colors has a wide selection of men’s tights as well as women’s. How awesome is that?!

You may wish to check out this photo set for outfit inspiration.

So, check out their selection, and leave a comment! On Saturday, July 4 I’ll have my boss at work pick two random numbers, and those two lucky winners will recieve a pair of fabulous tights from We Love Colors for free!

Woo hoo!

maybe lucid dreams

June 29th, 2009 by Brittney

Or,
Things I Am Adoring this week.

So it’s totally been an eternity since I’ve done a “Lemon Loving” post! I’m getting on this like a runaway train.

I did something kinda silly the other day and bought a bathrobe. It is a light stretchy material and has an awesome damask pattern on it. I feel totally fabulous when I wear it around the house, and it’s a great alternative to a heavy sweater when I get a little chilly when the sun goes down.

I’m not going to lie, today I wore pigtails and I love them so much! They’re cute and fun and unique, since not a lot of ladies wear their hair like this anymore. I’m also a big fan of wearing my hair in two low buns. (But not quite the Leia look! I’m not that nerdy, I swear!)

Shorts! This is going to sound totally dumb, but as a semi-plus sized lady I’ve been rather terrified of showing off my legs for the last few years. This has resulted in legs the colour of computer paper (not even kidding here) and being overwhelmingly hot all summer. This year I’ve already purchased 2 pairs of shorts in the hopes of curing this fear. I love them, and it’s incredibly freeing to walk around all day in a different look than jeans.

Saturday Jane’s dance post!
I’m not even kidding when I say that this is the cutest blog post you’ll ever read. Jessica is extremely excited for her new apartment and had to share it with the world in the best way she knows how!

I’m generally a red-lipstick girl (L’Oreal’s British Red Coat lipstick, to be exact) but with the sunshiney weather (and my slight-freckle-tan) I’ve broken out my deep and light coloured pinks to much success! Like everything, it’s nice for a change, and it’s nice to experiment with new colours. A light peach colour or light pink lip can really dress up any look, and is just a nice way to start out a day.

I grew up with a batch of raspberries in my backyard, so I get extremely nostalgic an excited as soon as I see raspberries in stores and have my “first summer raspberry”. I love them so, I’ll eat an entire flat if nobody’s looking! I’m excited for the full array of berry-covered goodies that are coming in the next month. Mmmm berries!
Unruly things has a few lovely photos of berries, if you want to drool all over your computer.

I know I just said that I bought a bathrobe so that I wouldn’t have to break out my sweater whenever I get cold (which is about every five minutes) but I found this sweater at Ross for $7 and it is probably the coolest thing I’ve ever purchased. It’s houndstooth pink and gray, and the collar is soft and flexible so I can look like a smart businesswoman, or a air-hostess from the 60’s. It is FABULOUS and I’m kind of sad that it’s too hot right now to wear it, because I want to show it off!

These clear plastic boots from this post have got me droolin’. Just think of all the exciting looks you could pull off with these… coloured tights, cool socks, the possibilities are endless! It’d be like owning 10 different pairs of boots in one! I would promise not to wear my fuzzy cat socks with them, even. They’re that cool.

What things are you loving this week?

market day

June 28th, 2009 by Brittney

Today I ventured to Portland’s Saturday Market (even though today was Sunday) and this is what I wore!

New yellow “scooter” (skirt with inner shorts. I always thought this was a Scort?!) on clearance for $13, purchased on a whim, and also because my friend Liz looks amazing in her yellow shorts and I wanted to be cool like her.
Also wearing yellow necklace + button earrings, and a black tank.

I felt rather cute today, I’m not going to lie. Though I found it highly amusing that my friend Nikki hopped out of her car this morning… to reveal that she too was wearing yellow shorts! It’s okay though, matching is totally in as long as you’re friends.

Target apple shoes. $6 from Goodwill.
Black socks? Work better than white ones, apparently. I had to try on seven different pairs of socks before I settled with these. Hahahaa.

Waiting for the MAX. (Free, because I have a pass! AWESOME.)
I felt like I should be playing tennis in the 50’s, or something.

So we went to the Market! On the train, a creepy dude patted my friend Katy’s arm a lot, and we all were extremely uncomfortable! When we finally got to the Market, we explored the booths, looking at carniverous plants, lots of cat-nip toys, and tie-dyed wrap skirts. I had peach bubble tea and found some new cool earrings.

We also tried on hats.

So tell me, what do you look at when you go to the market in your city?

some shopping advice

June 25th, 2009 by Brittney

Enduring my two nights a week being The Fitting Room Lady at a chain retail store, I have learned a lot from observing hundreds of women try on armful after armful of clothing that doesn’t work for them over and over again.

I’ve never understood my friends who hated stores and shopping and the time spent searching for a pair of pants or a new dress. To me, the fear of salelsady judgement* and being “too fat” for the clothes that they wanted held my friends back from a wide world of wonderfully fun times.

I grew up in a shopping home. This means that when my Mom, sister and I are bored, we go shopping. We go shopping alone, and we go shopping together. We try on outfits because they’re ugly, or because they’re outrageous, or because they’re perfect for matching a couch. We buy little black dresses simply because they fit, not because we need them. We try new accessories and we look at the expensive purses. We try things. It’s constant. I love it. I love shopping, and I love the fun and bonding my family (and shopping friends!) can experience because of what we like.

So now that I’ve spent nearly a year (Geez, I really didn’t think I’d last this long!) being The Fitting Room Lady I have a few insights into the Fear of Shopping. Mostly from watching women sabotage themselves and the fun that shopping can be over and over again.

And here is my general disclaimer, again. I love shopping. I understand not liking it, but don’t be afraid to give it a go. I sometimes have panic attacks about my blog, and how it is somehow sabotaging Everything That Is Feminist, but whatever, I like what I like, and can only give you insights into what I know, which is shopping, and how it can be totally awesome, so it’s great, the end. Woo.

So, here are Lemon Love’s Shopping Fabulosity Guide!
(OMG it’s like the title is from Seventeen or something! I’m so clever.)

1. Find out / Know your size.

At least once every shift a woman will come through my lineup with an armful of clothing. One look at her selection will show me that she has no idea what her size is. A pair of size 14 slacks, a pair of size 7 jeans from the juniors section, two “small” tank tops, a few “large” sweaters and a t-shirt sized at “2x”… She has no idea. There’s nothing wrong with going to a store with the intention of finding your size, but if your selection looks like this every time you go shopping… there’s a reason why nothing fits.

If you need to, write it down in a notebook! Have a “shopping list” of what looks good on you. I have friends who wear “Large” t-shirts but go for the “Extra Large” tank-tops because of their chest size, and I know that in certain brands I’m a “Large”, but not a “Medium”. Recognizing that sometimes there’s a difference, but overall you fit into a single size bracket will reduce the breaking of your heart.

Also: Reduce heartbreak by a) not looking at things that aren’t in your size “bracket” or b) writing them off as not fabulous for you. If they don’t fit on your body they’re not going to make you look fabulous.
(Tip: Hold the pants/shirt up to your body before you take it into the fitting room. Do you really think this will stretch over you? Yes? Try it on. No? Leave it there. And if it will stretch over your body but leave enough space for a small pony, leave it on the rack, it’s too big for you.)

Also I would like to state, out loud, on the Internet, in English (because I don’t know Swahili as well as I used to) that there is a distinct difference in sizing between clothing categorized as “Women’s” and “Junior’s” (or sometimes “Missies”). Clothing marketed towards younger women runs about a size and a half smaller than clothing marketed towards older women, so keep that in mind when picking out clothes.

2. Take an outspoken friend.

Bonding is really the best part about shopping, whether it involves mutual dislike (“Oh gosh why is the new trend ruffles?!”) or mutual love (“You love belting at the natural waist too?! It’s so hot!”). Spending time looking at anything with a friend will bring you together in a very unique way. So take a friend. If they’re a good friend, they’ll tell you when the pants don’t quite fit, or when the skirt emphasizes your booty a little too much.

Also: If you find yourself without a friend, work up the guts to talk to a saleslady(person). Yes, we might be incredibly stylish and completely intimidating (because we’re so stylish and awesome and hot and yes I totally need a boyfriend drop me a line) but to be 100% honest? We’ll hook you up. Yes, we have stuff to get done and clothing to hang up, but we also get paid for customer service and it’s really fun to tell a nice girl that an outfit looks great on her, or maybe suggest a different style of cropped pant or shirt that will make her look more shapely. We can’t always fix the problem or find you the perfect outfit, but don’t hesitate to ask!
(It might be my absolute most favourite part about my job, but don’t tell my boss that, mmkay?)

3. Be adventurous.

Just because a shirt looks hideous on the hanger doesn’t always mean that it’s going to look hideous on you. Sometimes hidden darts and shapes and flattering colour combinations can be revealed! I know that a few of my favourite outfits came from “Oh gosh, this is so completely ugly” finds. The only reason why I found them was because I decided to be silly and try on something I hated, and what do you know? They were awesome! Most of the time you’ll only find misses, but taking the time to look at yourself in the mirror and isolate why they don’t work can help you a lot in the way of shopping woes.

For instance, I’ll revisit this sweater, jacket, thing:

What I liked about it:
1. It was very unique.
2. It was horrendous. (In the, everyone-would-talk-to-me-about-it kind of way)
3. It had a furry hood.

Why it didn’t work for me:
1. It didn’t have sleeves (I have rather large arms that I can get stupidly self-conscious about. Also: I get cold easily.)
2. It was the wrong colour. (I’m ridiculously pale, and gray has never been a super flattering colour / I tend to avoid the few gray items that live in my closet anyway.)
3. I hate drawstrings. (They get in the way, get tied too tightly, generally look sloppy.)
4. The pocket pooch emphasized my lower stomach in an incredibly unflattering way. (Emphasizing tummy + exposed upper arms + boring colour = I felt extremely blah and overweight and completely unfabulous. Also, the way the pooch moved with the drawstring and the fabric made my boobs look flat. Q: Who wants flat boobs? A: Someone who is not me.)
5. The zipper got stuck when I put it on. (-100 points for being difficult!)

So I voted it a “No”. Even though I loved it. Even though it had a furry hood and oh man I would probably cross the Sahara if they were handing out free jackets with furry hoods on the other side. (Also it was $40, and I am le cheap.)

But trying it on and thinking about what worked and what didn’t showed me A) that I am really unnaturally obsessed with furry hoods, and B) that I could comfortably wear a… sweater/dress/thing/whatever this is if it had a lower belted waist, some cap sleeves, and no tummy poochy thing. Also I got some cool blog fodder.

So be adventurous. You never know what you could find!

That’s all I’ve got in shopping tips for now, though I’m sure I’ll have three more after work tomorrow night. What do you do to make your shopping trips easier or more fabulous?

*Who (as I can say from experience) doesn’t care who you are or what you do as long as you’re not loud and obnoxious, rude, and/or messing up her area.
