you could be a part-time model
There are a few things in life I fundamentally believe in. One of those things is the fact that there is never an inappropriate time to bake a cake.
It being end of term, I decided to try out omnomicon’s rainbow cake recipe! I then examined the “diet” reicpe and decided that since I was going to take this cake to share, I’d use the regular cake mix. Delicious!

The mix all sorted out. Looks cool, eh?

All dyed up!
A few people have remarked on the brilliancy of the colours, but really? It’s not that hard: just use a lot, and mix mix mix mix mix it up! It does help that I was paid to mix and food-colour fudge for a local gift shop a few years back, so I have loads of experience, but still! Easy-As-Pie, only… here we’re making cake.

Frosted it with just white frosting, which made cutting it open a bit more exciting for everyone I fed it to in class. It was a smashing success, and was devoured in a neat half-hour! Win!
What fun things have you done lately?
*Scratch cakes taste like bricks. Every single scratch cake I have ever had has tasted awful, and I am friends with some rather good pastry chefs. Cake mixes are AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE~!

This is the coolest thing I’ve seen in AGES. Can you FedEx a slice to Mpls, please?

This cake is the most fun I have ever had in the kitchen.
Next time try cupcakes: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_LAsnCdyXxPM/SjQ0kS0YusI/AAAAAAAAAl0/hxkTRTzWneg/s288/rainbow.jpg

@Amanda You’re welcome to challeng me, but I’ll warn you that my taste buds tend to run to “tasteless”. And scratch cakes just FEEL like bricks, where in my opinion box cakes are lighter and fluffier. Yum! But yay! CAKE CHALLENGE IS ON.

@Sal Thank you! And I would if there was any left! It was too delicious to spare!

@Laura It’s totally fun, but the dishes are a bit horrendous!

@Ambi Oooh cupcakes would be fun! Only they’d be SUPER hard, especially with all of the trouble I had with getting the different dyed batter to layer.

I put each color in it’s own ziplock bag, snip the corner, and filled the cupcake tin one color at a time. It takes calculating how much color you’ll need in each tin to fill it or not over fill it. Some of the cupcakes I made ended up with more or less of one color (usually a lot of red, less blue). I got better at judging that the more I made them.

I can’t believe my eyes! That is amazing.

I think I need to see the recipe you use for a “scratch” cake. Do you mean a really plain pound type cake, or just anything you make yourself from scratch?

That looks ace!
If you take a skewer and swirl the colours about after you pour them in, you get a really awesome marbled effect to the cake. It looks really psychedelic and trippy!

Oh, wow, I really want to try this out.
